Translation is derivative work, and for that same reason the craft has been demeaned through the ages. Two folks I appreciate, German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer and Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci did not love translators at all. Both thought translators ruined their ideas and beauty of their texts. Schopenhauer hated almost everything and everybody, even the French and English languages he considered vulgar, so it is not surprising he hated translators. On the other hand, the translator who often translated Fallaci’s works into English said the Italian author was under the delusion that she wrote English well, but she in fact wrote in Orianese, weird English written with Italian syntax, grammar and idioms.
The major advantage a Translator-Writer has over translators who veer off writing their own material is that creative writing gives them better vocabulary skills and editing ability than their peers. One should not be very fanciful or poetic when translating a legal judgment or medical report, however, you would also be surprised how many judges and lawyers flex their literary muscles every so often, with mixed results. Creative writing does boost one’s capability of interpreting poorly written text even in those disciplines.
I have written over ten books, most in English and Portuguese, and literally tens of thousands of blog entries since 2003. Most of these I pulled off from the web, due to copyright considerations and AI use. I also wrote newsletters on several subjects in the early 90s, and published a magazine called Brazil Sourcing for a few years. I had articles published in several newspapers, in Brazil and USA.
