Linguee is a nice site that provides two things: a comparative translation feature, which picks up translations from millions of sites worldwide and provides translations for the individually searched terms, and an AI translation platform.
Needless to say, the majority of the results in the comparative side are translations done by AI. And Linguee proves my point, for the results range from excellent, right-on renderings to dreadful out of context mistranslations. In other words, the choice of term lies in the user who may not be an experienced and qualified professional. Linguee proves that as far as translations are concerned, AI goes all over the place and needs human assistance.
The translation platform, which we test ever so often, and which clients use for translation, is alright, but like all other AI translation tools fails to read context, provides weird and confusing renderings for complex sentences, and can be a handful when the original is flawed (lack of punctuation, unclear ideas, improper terminology, missing words, poor grammar, etc).
While the comparative translation feature can be useful to a professional translator, it can be a weapon of mass destruction for people with passing linguistic or technical terminology knowledge.
